Since the 1930s, road transport has played a decisive role in Morocco's economy. As a result, the country's fleet of vans and trucks continued to grow. The first French vehicles of the Protectorate and pacification era were followed by vehicles from the American surplus of the Second World War. The 1950s saw American brands battling it out with their European counterparts, mainly from France, the UK, Germany and Sweden.

Things changed in 1962, when new customs regulations were introduced, imposing heavy taxes on imports of complete vehicles, in order to encourage local assembly and promote the development of Moroccan industry. From then on, the few brands that set up local factories dominated the market: Berliet Maroc, but also Bedford, Ford and Volvo found themselves virtually without competition.

The result of almost 50 years of history is a fleet of vehicles of extraordinary diversity and interest, which this special issue aims to present in some 280 photos.
