Series: Occasional paper N°80 - camion de chez nous au Sénégal
(pages: 84)
Senegal is one of Africa's most popular tourist destinations. It is a very open country, with a decent road network, particularly in the west of the country and around its capital, Dakar. This special edition presents a sort of snapshot of the Senegalese road landscape in 2004, through a selection of representative vehicles, both in terms of models and numbers. Unsurprisingly, the vast majority of vehicles are of French make. The Senegalese commercial vehicle market is overwhelmingly made up of used vehicles, as most transporters and users do not have the means to acquire new vehicles. As a result, the country is a magnet for French and, to a lesser extent, European dealers, who can bring the most unlikely trucks onto the country's roads.
Senegalese users are also very inventive when it comes to modifying and adapting imported vehicles to their needs, sometimes giving rise to incredible hybrids... For truck and coach enthusiasts, Senegal is a delight. As well as being able to see many of the models that have all but disappeared in France, they sometimes come across vehicles in the colors of transporters who have kept their original livery, and sometimes even the name of their previous owner...
