Fairgoers are a world apart. Like circus performers, they move from town to town or village to village to set up their stalls and rides for the duration of a funfair. Most have winter quarters where they can park or store their vehicles during the off-season. But the vast majority of fairground craftsmen have very limited means.

This is why they never buy new trucks to transport their equipment, first and foremost for reasons of cost, but also because the very low mileage they record (only a few hundred kilometers per year) doesn't justify it. For this reason, they have long since learned to make their equipment last, often devoting themselves to it with a veritable love, maintaining, repairing, repainting and decorating it with care.

Thanks to the fairground community, a whole section of the old-time road scene was able to survive for many years, even though trucks, tractors and semi-trailers had long since disappeared from hauliers' fleets, with a few rare exceptions. And thanks to them, a number of vehicles have been saved, bought up by collectors and restored. This book is simply an evocation of all this equipment, whose diversity is matched only by its charm.
